•A program on butterflies and damselflies will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 15 at the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge. The program, part of the Friends of the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge field trip series, will be led by Tom Murray, a photographer and an expert on butterflies. Participants will meet at the refuge entrance off McPherson Road on the Ayer-Shirley line. They should wear sturdy footwear, dress for forecasted weather and bring insect repellent. •The Friends of Willard Brook will host a hike on the Friends Trail, led by Kiirja Panaanen, at 9:45 a.m. July 16. The five-mile trail, completed a year ago, extends from Pearl Hill State Park to Damon Pond at Willard Brook State Forest. Participants should meet at the Pearl Hill parking lot on New Fitchburg Road in West Townsend. Participants should wear sturdy hiking boots, and bring water and a snack. The hike will be at a moderate pace, with rest stops. For more information, call Kiirja Panaanen at (978) 582-9248. The Friends will also present a program on insects from 10 to 11:30 a.m. July 23 at Willard Brook State Forest. Michael Veit, who lives in Pepperell and teaches science at Lawrence Academy in Groton, will identify insects and explain their behavior. •The Fitchburg Military Band will present free concerts at 2 p.m. July 16 and July 30 at Coggshall Park. The concerts are sponsored by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

•The Village Nursery School & Kindergarten, a nonprofit organization, is accepting applications on a rolling basis for children who will turn 2.9 years old after Sept. 1. There is a waiting list for this program, but a few spaces are available for children ages 3 to 5 for the 2006-07 school year. Classes are held from 9 a.m. to noon, and two-, three-, and four-day-per-week programs are offered. To schedule a visit, or request an application, call the school at (978) 456-3993. Financial aid is available for eligible families.

•The Aqua Ducks Red Hat Club will hold a Red Hat Society Tea in the Narragansett Historical Society Garden on July 16, between 2 and 4 p.m. Members of all Red Hat Clubs are welcome. The entire $6 cost for the tea will be donated to the Narragansett Historical Society to replace the carpet in the front hall.
